It's Almost NaMoPaiMo Time

Entries have opened up to join NaMoPaiMo 2025! If you're not familiar with it, February is the month to paint a model horse! It's a fun event for artists of all skill levels to get together and paint. It can be any scale, any media, and any color! As long as it is a 3D Equine that you are painting. February is such a suck bucket of a month otherwise that it is the perfect time to dive in to artistic pursuits.

Although it has been a tradition now for many years, I have only actually participated and completed my project one time, eeep! Last year I was simultaneously way too ambitious with my project and also completely swamped with my day job that I didn't even come close to finishing. This year I decided I should scale way back and do a mini. Not that minis are easier exactly, but they feel less overwhelming somehow. I was also going to just have fun with it and maybe do wild deco - but I've already started feeling more ambitious and may try for a realistic appaloosa again. I learned so much the last time and the only way to get better is to keep practicing!

It was just announce that this year Stone Horses is sponsoring the event and everyone who commits to painting a Stone horse and everyone who finishes their Stone horse will be entered in a drawing to win a model - how fun! I hadn't picked a body yet but this is definitely swaying me towards a chip or pebble body. And it was a good kick in the butt to get on to that because look at the date! February will be here before we know it and I need to get prepping and priming. It's the part I like the least - I can never seem to get a smooth base - but since it's just something I'm doing for me and my shelf I try not to get too hung up about it being perfect.

This year especially I'm looking forward to the distraction. I usually sit down after work and instead of hitting TV or social media I get to working on my entry, which is way more fun and satisfying. There is a NaMo Facebook group though and that's a ton of fun to be in because I love to watch everyone's progress and be inspired by all the art happening - plus there is a ton of great advice from experts and lots of people willing to offer advice if you need a critique or get stuck on something.

I hope you'll join us!
