If you're like me and you love vintage and you can't get enough of variations then you might find yourself going down the dapple grey running foal rabbit hole! This foal and the matching running mare were made from 1961-1973 and so like many Breyer models that had extended runs, they come in a wide number of variations. This also means they are plentiful and inexpensive - making them even harder to resist.
This can be said of most of the vintage Breyer dapple greys - I know many people who can't get enough of the proud arabians, the old timer, the clydesdale stallion, the belgian or even the foundation stallion in splatter dapple grey. They come in so many cool patterns from big spots to little spots, from dark to light, that there seems to be an endless variety.
When I first started collecting vintage, my mother bought me a glossy dapple grey running mare and foal set with blue ribbon stickers for my birthday. I already loved the running mare & foal but this run definitely became a sentimental favorite for me after that. I can see my mare needs a little window time!

I usually have to sit on my hands when I find them on eBay because there are just so many cool ones. I can see how one could easily have 10, 20, or even 50+ of just this set. Recently though I bought this new one on eBay. I usually look for interesting spot patterns but I haven't seen many without the four distinct white socks. I also recently found a dapple grey Old Timer with just two socks, so this looks like my thing at the moment. Now I will have to keep an eye out for a mare with a solid leg or two and they will make a cute set!
Interestingly this one is also my first one to have a USA mold stamp, dating him to 1970 or later. I would love to find a matte one eventually too - they are very scarce and probably only made in 1973.
Do you collect any variations of the same model? What is your potato chip?
